Our work is built-in and professional refrigeration, in Hillcrest and the Uptown neighborhoods around it: Bankers Hill, Mission Hills, University Heights, the west side of North Park and Old Town. That is a small service area by San Diego standards, and it is deliberate. The kitchens inside 92103 and the ZIP codes touching it are a particular kind of work, and doing the same kind of work every day is what makes a diagnosis quick.
Uptown was built out long before anyone designed a kitchen around a 48-inch built-in. Most of the units we open here went into a space that was cut for them during a remodel, either a bungalow kitchen in Mission Hills or University Heights that gained a wall of cabinetry it was never framed for, or a condo galley where the refrigerator sits under a closed soffit with a filler panel on each side. That matters more than it sounds. This equipment gets rid of its heat through a grille and needs somewhere for that air to go. When the opening is tight, the same faults arrive years earlier than they would in a house with room around the box.
Two other things follow from small homes. The first is that people here hear their appliances. In an open condo kitchen the condenser fan is the loudest machine in the room, so we get called about a new rattle weeks before the same fan would be noticed in a larger house. That is genuinely good news. Reported while it is only noisy, it is still a fan. Reported once it has stopped turning, it is a warm refrigerator and an emptied shopping trip.
Two other outfits had already been out to our old PRO 48 and both wanted to talk about replacing it. This guy knew which control generation was in the Mission Hills kitchen the moment he read the plate, ordered the right part, and the thing is still running.
Water kept showing up under the fridge in batches, never clean. He said before the panel was even off that it would be the defrost drain iced shut, and it was. Our University Heights place has the original hardwood, so I was glad it was a same day fix.
Baking on the Wolf had been off for a while, everything coming out pale, though the oven read the right number the whole time. He tested the sensor cold and then again hot, where it went open. He also called ahead about the market closing Normal Street, which saved him circling.
