What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
A sound that is new is nearly always coming from the machine room behind the grille, not from the cabinet you open.
What is actually going on
The condenser fan rattles once its bearing wears or something works its way onto the blade. Compressor mounts harden with age and pass a hum into the cabinetry, which a stone countertop in a small kitchen then amplifies. Neither is an emergency on the day it starts, and in a Hillcrest galley you will hear it start. But once that fan stops turning, the heat has nowhere to go, and you are no longer buying a fan.
What we check, and in what order
People in Hillcrest catch this one earlier than most, and that is worth something. In an open condo kitchen or a small bungalow the refrigerator is the loudest machine in the home, and a change in it is obvious from the next room. A fan reported while it is merely noisy is a same-visit repair. The same fan reported after it has stopped turning is a warm refrigerator, a spoiled shopping trip and a longer bill.
What we check, in order. Whether the noise follows the compressor cycle or runs constantly. The condenser fan blade and its bearing, and whether debris has reached it through the grille. The evaporator fan behind the rear panel, which whines rather than rattles when it goes. Then the compressor mounts, and whether the cabinet itself is touching the surrounding woodwork: in a tight opening, a unit that has shifted a millimeter will buzz against a filler panel, and that one is fixed with a hand rather than a part.

Our kitchen is open to the living room so a new rattle drove us mad inside a week. It was the fan behind the grille on the Thermador column, bearing gone. He had one with him and the place was quiet again before lunch.

What parts do you fit on an older Uptown machine?
Factory-approved parts; nothing aftermarket unless you ask and we agree first. A machine fitted in a 1990s Hillcrest remodel is often still the machine in that kitchen, so the call starts with which generation you have. A fan motor or thermistor for a current column is stock; a board for an early PRO 48 may have to be sourced, and we say so when quoting.
What is covered after the repair, and what about my manufacturer warranty?
Whatever we install, and the work to install it, sits under our own warranty. Check the age of the machine first: a unit put in during a recent Hillcrest remodel may still hold factory coverage, and on sealed-system work that coverage can hinge on who opens the machine, so call the manufacturer first. Most kitchens up here aged out of factory coverage years ago.
